Ashton on Mersey CC 1st XI 98 all out

Cheshire County Cricket League Division 2 Ashton on Mersey CC 1st XI 98 all out Lost to Stockport CC 1st XI 100-3 Ashton on Mersey crashed to another defeat as their difficult season continued with a visit to Stockport CC. Losing the toss and being asked to bat first, on a track which offered help to the bowlers, Ashton lost early wickets once again. Haris Yassin and Fraser Hay brought some stability to the batting effort with a 60-run partnership and with the score at 71-2 Ashton would have been looking to build a competitive total. But in a sad repeat of many games this season the rest of the batting fell well short of what was required, with the last 8 wickets falling for just 27 runs. The total of 98 all out in just 30 overs was never going to be a challenge for the home side, and Stockport knocked off the runs for the loss of 3 wickets. This defeat, against a side also struggling at the wrong end of the table, was a new low in a season of lows, and the club is now staring relegation squarely in the face. The Ashton 2nd XI brought some cheer with a fine win at The Beets over Port Sunlight. The Weekend Report

Another mixed bag of results for the seniors over the weekend, with the 1s and three losing but the 2s posting a huge win. The 1s difficult season continued as they came up short at Cheadle Hulme. The top order batters all got starts but no-one was able to go on to build a match-defining score. Our total of 166 was always going to be a bit below par, and with Cheadle Hulme’s experienced skipper, Adam Wilde, taking control, the hosts got the runs with 9 balls to spare. The loss leaves us at the foot of the table with two massive games in the coming weeks against relegation rivals. The 2s brightened the mood with a demolition of Stockport at The Beets. Sam Thozer led from the front with the bat, hitting 85, with Finn Coburn providing fine support with a 40, as we posted 197. In reply Stockport wilted under our bowling attack as Rafay Qazi and Jo Middleton reduced our guests to 30-5 before handing over to young guns Zach Roberts (2-9) and Max Lilley (3-6) who blew away the tail, leaving Stockport all out for just 56. The 3s lost a close contest at Cheadle in a game where our younger players once again did the club proud against a largely adult team. Cheadle’s score of 175 -9 saw Finn Coburn follow up his batting exploits of the previous day with a 6 wicket haul off his 10 overs. Not content with that, Finn then hit a fine 50 as we remained on track until Fin’s unfortunate run out knocked the Ashton innings off course. Despite some spirited lower order batting, we were unlucky to fall just 15 short in a rather feisty innings marred by some rather unedifying sledging of our junior umpires. Another day which showed that our development plans are producing results – not least in Joe Barlow’s rapidly developing wicket keeping skills and well crafted 40 opening the batting. Ashton on Mersey came up short in their vital clash on the road at Cheadle Hulme.

Winning the toss and choosing to bat first, Ashton began well without getting fully on top of the home bowling. Whilst all of the top order batters got starts, none of them were able to go on to make the big score that would have shifted the game in Ashton’s favour. The home bowling was accurate enough on a pitch that gave help, and Ashton lost wickets trying to up the run rate. The final total of 166 seemed below par, although it gave Ashton something to defend. The hosts batted sensibly, knowing their target and with Oliver Willett and Adam Wilde taking control, the game drifted away from Ashton.  Willett went for 54 but Wilde steered the hosts home by 6 wickets, remaining unbeaten on 76. The loss keeps Ashton at the foot of the table, with the next three weeks now vital for any chance of survival in the Division. The Ashton 2nd XI delivered an emphatic win against Stockport at The Beets. Ashton 197 (Sam Thoburn 85, Finn Coburn 40) Stockport 56 all out (Max Lilley 3-6, Joe Middleton 3-11). The 3rd XI lost a close game at Cheadle. Cheadle 175-9 (Hamza Rais 76, Finn Coburn 6-50). Ashton 160 all out (Finn Coburn 53).   Pictured James Marshall bats  Charlie Eaton bowls
