Another disappointing Saturday for the 1s as the batting demons returned to haunt us on the road at Stockport. But we saw a fine display by the 2s who demolished Port Sunlight at The Beets. The 1s remain firmly rooted to the foot of the table after a day to forget at Stockport. Being asked to bat first, Haris Yassin and Fraser Hay seemed up to the task, shrugging off the early loss of two wickets to take us to 72-2. What then followed was a collapse of epic proportions as we lost the last 8 wickets for just 27 runs. Some lack of luck with decisions for sure, but not helped by 5 ducks and only 3 players reaching double figures, nor the fact that the innings only lasted 30 overs. Stockport strolled to the win for the loss of just three wickets, leaving us well off the pace in the relegation battle. The 2s brought much needed happiness as they stormed to a fine home win. Sam “run machine” Thoburn added to his tally for the season with a fine 82, Will Kain slapped a quickfire 50 and Joe “they should really bat me up the order” Middleton hit out at the end to allow us to post 223. Sunlight were never in the hunt as Joe “I can bowl a bit as well you know” Middleton and Max Lilly bagged 3 wickets each to wipe out our guests for 108. A fine win. A bit of a brutal one for the 3’s this week- replying to Heaton Mersey’s 209, Ashton collapsed to 62 all out despite spirited resistance from Joe Barlow and Zach Roberts in what was our most one sided defeat of the season, our young guns will be looking to bounce back against Romiley at the weekend.

Ashton on Mersey CC 1st XI 250 all out

Cheshire County Cricket League Division 2 Ashton on Mersey CC 1st XI 250 all out Lost to Upton CC 1st XI 356 -7 Ashton on Mersey toiled on a scorching day at The Beets as their disappointing season continued with a loss to Upton. Losing the toss and being asked to bowl first on one of the hottest days of the year, the home side were soon hampered by the removal from their attack of their main strike bowler. Fraser Hay. Hay’s hamstring strain limited him to just five excellent overs, and his loss proved a major problem for the home attack. Ashton managed to grab two early wickets but Chris McArthur and Lee Dixon came together to put the support bowling to the sword. With both players looking unthreatened by anything Ashton could deliver, they put on over 150 runs for the 3rd wicket to take the game away from the hosts. McArthur went through to a fine century, eventually falling for 122 at better than a run a ball. Dixon fell just 13 runs short of his ton, but any hope that the Upton score could be kept within sight was snuffed out by Joe Green and Matty Brayne who drove the score beyond the 350 mark in quick time. The Ashton bowling kept going on a hugely challenging day, but their lack of penetration without the services of Hay was notable. In reply Ashton bravely went for the runs from the off, but the loss of wickets prevented any chance of a miracle chase. A half century for Tom Jenkinson and some fine hitting from James Marshall were the highlights of a defiant innings from Ashton, but even a maximum bonus point total of 250 left them losers by 106 runs. David Williams pocketed 5-51 to take the bowling honours. The loss leaves Ashton rock bottom of the table and a long way adrift from safety. They will be playing for pride over the coming weeks. The 2nd XI recorded another fine win at promotion chasing Romiley. Ashton on Mersey CC 1st XI 98 all out

Cheshire County Cricket League Division 2 Ashton on Mersey CC 1st XI 98 all out Lost to Stockport CC 1st XI 100-3 Ashton on Mersey crashed to another defeat as their difficult season continued with a visit to Stockport CC. Losing the toss and being asked to bat first, on a track which offered help to the bowlers, Ashton lost early wickets once again. Haris Yassin and Fraser Hay brought some stability to the batting effort with a 60-run partnership and with the score at 71-2 Ashton would have been looking to build a competitive total. But in a sad repeat of many games this season the rest of the batting fell well short of what was required, with the last 8 wickets falling for just 27 runs. The total of 98 all out in just 30 overs was never going to be a challenge for the home side, and Stockport knocked off the runs for the loss of 3 wickets. This defeat, against a side also struggling at the wrong end of the table, was a new low in a season of lows, and the club is now staring relegation squarely in the face. The Ashton 2nd XI brought some cheer with a fine win at The Beets over Port Sunlight.
