Cheshire County Cricket League Division 3. Ashton on Mersey CC 1st XI 200-7 Beat Hale Barns CC 1st XI 88-4 on DLS method. Ashton sealed the 3rd Division title with a battling performance on a day interrupted by rain.  Being asked to bat first, Ashton struggled in the early overs as some accurate Barns bowling made full use of the conditions.  Charlie Eaton steadied the ship with a fluent middle order knock, knowing that if Ashton could reach 200, the bonus points would guarantee promotion. That task looked challenging as Ashton entered the last two overs still needing 20 runs to hit their target. But Mark Weighill and Kris Green got those runs through a mixture of firmly struck boundaries and scrambled singles, including a bye off the last ball of the innings.  In reply Hale Barns lost early wickets and were 4 down when rain halted proceedings. Despite several attempts to get back on, the rain prevented any further play, leaving Ashton winners by 84 runs under the DLS method. The title is well deserved as Ashton have played entertaining and enjoyable cricket throughout the season. Ashton’s 2nd team rounded off their season with a win at Heaton Mersey. Cheshire County Cricket League Division 3 Ashton on Mersey CC 1st XI 170 -8 Lost to Irby CC 1st XI 171-9 Ashton on Mersey came agonisingly close to wrapping up the 3rd Division title in a nailbiting contest at Irby, before falling just short. Being asked to bat first on a surface that offered much for the home bowlers, Ashton’s innings was dominated by a hundred partnership between Harris Yassin and Tom Scott. With the pair taking the total to 125-1, Ashton looked set to post an imposing total, but when both Scott and Yassin fell on that score, the Ashton effort stalled. With the home spinners in charge, Ashton lost 7 wickets for just 45 runs to finish on a disappointing 170.  In reply, Irby started confidently with opener Jared Bone leading the way with a fine 50.  At 108-1 Irby looked strong favourites, but some fine bowling by Charlie Eaton and Mark Weighill brought the visitors back into the game. The pair reduced Irby to 124-8 and Ashton seemed to have snatched back control.  But some lusty hitting by Muhammad Rizwan Junior swung the pendulum back into Irby’s favour until his luck ran out leaving the home side needing 7 runs with the last pair at the crease. Ashton had a strong appeals for an lbw decision and a slip catch denied, and Irby scrambled the runs for a 1 wicket win. The result leaves Ashton needing a handful of points in the final game of the season to secure promotion and the title. Ashton’s 2nd XI overwhelmed Ashley at The Beets. Ashton 246-4 (Sam Thozer 99, Joe Gadsby 92) Ashley 79 all out (Ryan Carey 4-12).  The 3rd XI signed off their season with a win over Trafford MV. 2nd XI Division 2 Cheshire County Cricket League 2nd XI Division 2 Ashton on Mersey CC 2nd XI 134 all out Beat Upton CC 83 all out. With Ashton’s 1st XI match being washed out after 6 overs, attention turned to the 2nd XI’s trip to the Wirral where conditions allowed one of the few games across the County to go ahead. On a difficult pitch Ashton struggled after being put into bat. Strokeplay was difficult but the whole batting order chipped in to help Ashton to a modest total of 134.  Whilst there were fears that the low total would be hard to defend, the hosts found batting just as tricky when their turn came. Two wickets each for Will Sarchet, Ryan Carey and Max Lilley helped the cause but the bowling honours went to skipper Sam Thozer whose 4 wicket haul allowed Ashton to record a fine 42 run win. Sunday saw Ashton’s 3rd XI demolish Stockport Georgians at The Beets. Ashton 265-6 (Mo Shaddan 88, Neil Manjoi 65 not out) Stockport Georgians 79 all out (Anirudh Anil 7-27).
