Fraser Hay appeals for an lbw

Ashton on Mersey CC 1st XI 250-5

Cheshire County Cricket League Division 2 Ashton on Mersey CC 1st XI 250-5 Beat Ashley CC 1st XI 249-9 Ashton on Mersey pulled off a fabulous win over Ashley at The Beets to keep their season alive. Winning the toss and opting to bat first, Ashley shrugged off the loss of two early wickets to put quick runs on the board Gautam Narayanan played fluently to lead the charge, but the introduction of spinner Yusuf Bhamjee slowed the run rate and wickets began to fall. Narayanan eventually went for a fine 89 but a burst of scoring from Jahangir Mushtaq and Sabtain Baig took the score past 200. Late wickets denied the visitors the large total they had hoped for and their score of 249 seemed about par given a fine batting surface and a rapid outfield. Fraser Hay emerged with the best bowling figures of 3-55. In reply Ashton got off to a flyer with Hay and Hugh Gibbons putting on a century opening partnership before Hay departed for 61. Gibbons fell shortly after for 41 and the scoring slowed as the Ashley spinners pulled the visitors back into the game. Ashton stuck to the task and led by teenager Charlie Eaton they got across the line. Eaton played with a maturity beyond his years to finish unbeaten on 64. The win brings Ashton into a three-way race to avoid the drop, with tough matches ahead, but with hopes high that this win sparks a late revival of fortunes. Ashton 2s were well beaten at Oakmere. Oakmere 206-8 (Ian Eaton 74Ryan Carey 4-24) Ashton 52 all out. Ashton’s 3rd XI were defeated at Didsbury. Over 40's promotion

PROMOTION NEWS!!

The Over 40’s capped off a memorable season last night with another convincing win against Timperley securing top spot, promotion to Division 2 and a top of the table finish. Batting first, unbeaten 30s from Vivek Tharaken and Adnan Shafiq provided the bedrock for a total of 132. The early efforts of our guests to chase the target looked promising, but wickets from Parvez Mirza and Zain Ali snuffed out any hope of an upset. This season could have been a tricky transition but with a mix of established and newer faces, the team has gone from strength to strength led by the indefatigable Vivek Tharaken. With 10 victories from 12 matches, one defeat and one abandonment, the team can look forward to the challenge of the higher standard of division 2 with optimism and confidence. Big thanks to all players, who have represented the club with such distinction, particularly Vivek for his astute leadership and Gareth Tuff for his sterling work on and off the pitch. Special congratulations to Zain Ali on winning player of the season!

Ashton on Mersey CC 1st XI 191

Cheshire County Cricket League Division 2 Ashton on Mersey CC 1st XI 191 Lost to Christleton CC 1st XI 275-5 Ashton on Mersey’s difficult season continued as they fell to another defeat away at Christleton. With the hosts winning the toss and choosing to bat, Ashton’s effort to keep control on the run rate struggled from the start as Max Dunbavand  and Ben Stoddart took the Ashton bowling apart. The runs continued to flow and despite Ashton breaking the opening partnership Stoddart continued to dominate proceedings.  He looked well set to record what would have been a well deserved century but fell one run short, being stumped trying to bring up three figures. The rest of the Christleton innings made the most of the foundations laid by the top order, with the Ashton bowling lacking either penetration or the ability to contain. The final total of 275 was a fair reflection of the balance of the game. In reply, Ashton tried to make a game of it but, in trying to maintain the rate needed, wickets fell. Charlie Eaton did his best to lead a revival but when he fell for 49, any real prospect of an Ashton win fell with him. Ashton’s effort came to an end 84 runs short with 10 overs unused. The failure of their bowling to either destroy or contain the opposition batting, and the lack of ability to consistently pace an innings has left them in dire trouble. They will need to show great character in the remaining games of the season. A weakened Ashton 2nd XI were no match for table topping Alderley Edge. Ashton 80 (Ashray Bhamidipati 6-34) Alderley Edge 84-1(Calum Wilson 52 not out). It was a similar story for the 3rd XI whose young side lost to an experienced Trafford Metrovics XI.
