Ashton on Mersey CC 1st XI 83 all out

Cheshire County Cricket League Division 2 Ashton on Mersey CC 1st XI 83 all out Lost to Alvanley CC 1st XI 85 -1 Ashton crashed to defeat at The Beets on a day when their batting disintegrated against a potent Alvanley pace attack Choosing to bat first, Ashton soon came to regret their decision as the opening bowling duo of Chris Charles and Ieuan Morris found lift and bounce from the track. A mixture of fine bowling and poor decision making by the Ashton batters saw the Ashton top order blown away, slumping to 18-7 with no-one in the top 7 making double figures. Mark Weighill and Yousuf Bhamjee staged a mini recovery against the change bowling but the end of the innings came swiftly once the splendid Morris returned to the attack. He finished with 4-22 with Charles posting 3-17 Alvanley knocked off the runs for the loss of just one wicket, to leave Ashton with plenty to think about ahead of next week’s visit to North East Cheshire. Ashton’s 2nd XI brought much needed cheer, recording a comprehensive victory over table topping Urmston. Ashton 216 all out (Ryan Carey 72, Richard Partington 4-54) Urmston 131 all out (Stan Hodgett 53). Pictured Tom Scott bats Charlie Eaton fields

Zaheer Khan bowls

Ashton on Mersey CC 1st XI 79 all out

Cheshire County Cricket League Division 2 Ashton on Mersey CC 1st XI 79 all outLost toHaslington CC 1st XI 165-9 Ashton fell to a heavy defeat on a disappointing day on the road at Haslington.Winning the toss and opting to bowl, Ashton’s pace attack looked sharp with Fraser Hay and Tai Khan both getting life out of a track which had variable bounce.Wickets fell regularly as change bowlers Kris Green and Zahir Khan put in excellent spells to limit the opposition batting. When the home side lost their 7th wicket with only 117 on the board, Ashton were clearly on top. But Freddie Taylor dug in for Haslington, grinding out a fine unbeaten 60 to help the tail wag. When the innings finished on 165-9 Ashton would have been concerned that they had leaked runs in the final overs but would still have been confident that the chase was within their capacity. Zaheer Khan was the bowling stand out finishing with 3-24.Ashton’s batting effort began badly, losing Hugh Gibbons in the first over without a run on the board. With the home bowling exploiting the help offered by the pitch, wickets fell at regular intervals, with too many players not understanding that this track needed batting of  graft rather than glitter. The procession of players continued with the final 7 batsmen all failing to reach double figures. The home bowlers were backed up by some excellent work in the field and by the end Ashton were a well beaten side. Jack Taylor finished with figures of 5-17 on a day which Ashton will want to forget.Next week Ashton will welcome table topping Alvanley to The Beets, needing a far better effort if they are to challenge one of the stronger sides in the league. The 2nd XI also lost to Haslington, in a nail biting encounter which went down to the last ball. Haslington 163 all out (Shahid Shabbir 4-23) Ashton 160-8 (Suhan Shetty 44). The 3rd XI recorded a fine win in their first league match of the season. Heaton Mersey 120 all out, Ashton 121-7. Ashton on Mersey CC 1st XI 217-9

Cheshire County Cricket League Division 2Ashton on Mersey CC 1st XI 217-9Lost to Upton CC 235-8Ashton lost on the road to an impressive Upton side, despite a battling effort which took them within tantalising distance of their target. With the home side choosing to bat first, Ashton had early success with Fraser Hay grabbing two well deserved early wickets. With Upton riding their luck, the home pair of Matt Owen and Lee Dixon re-built the innings. Both had to play watchfully at times, but they were never afraid to attack the bad ball.Once Dixon fell to skipper James Marshall, middle order wickets fell before Tom Marsland joined Owen to up the pace.Yousuf Bhamjee removed Marsland, but Owen held the tail together to complete an unbeaten  hundred as Upton finished on 235-8. Bhamjee finished with figures of 3-36 and Hay recorded 3-46.In reply Ashton got off to a steady start with Hugh Gibbons and Dave Patterson putting on 45 before Gibbons fell. The Ashton effort faltered as a mixture of good bowling and poor judgement saw the middle order collapse, leaving all seeming lost at 104-8.But Charlie Eaton had other things in mind. In one of the gutsiest knocks seen by an Ashton player in recent years, Eaton was a class apart as he took on the Upton attack. Partnered by Bhamjee, Eaton moved past his half century and brought thoughts of a dramatic win into focus. But when Bhamjee was run out with the score on 171, the task became even greater. Despite Eaton fighting to the finish with great support from Zaheer Khan, Ashton fell just 18 runs short when the overs ran out. Eaton’s unbeaten 77 in a losing cause will long be remembered.David Williams took the bowling honours with 4-18.There will be lessons to be learned by the Ashton team from this result and many of the more experienced batters would do well to consider why one of our younger players demonstrated maturity and confidence beyond what other could provide.Ashton’s 2nd XI went down to a second defeat of the season after failing to defend a reasonable total against Romiley at The Beets. Ashton 214-9 (Suhan Shetty 55 not out,Tom Stockton 40, George Healey 3-45), Romiley 216-3 (Alex Napier 126 not out). The 3rd XI also fell to defeat at home to Marple, in their 2nd T20 game of the season.
