Fraser Hay takes the first of his seven wickets

Ashton on Mersey recorded one of the most astounding victories in their long history, bowling out Stockport for just 18 runs in their clash at Cale Green.

With the home side winning the toss and opting to bat first, hopes of a steady start were dashed as Fraser Hay and James Marshall bowled a superb new ball spell to destroy Stockport’s batting line up.

With hardly a loose ball in sight, Hay and Marshall delivered a constantly stump-threatening challenge to the home batters who had no answer to the questions asked. Hay in particular found movement both in the air and off the pitch, as ball after ball threatened a wicket.

None of the Stockport batters got into double figures with 9 of the 10 wickets to fall being either bowled or lbw.

Hay finished with figures of 7 wickets for 8 runs, with Marshall posting 3 for 9.

Ashton knocked off the paltry target without loss within 4 overs.

Days like this are rare indeed and Ashton will long remember the quality of the bowling delivered by Hay and Marshall.

The win moves Ashton into mid-table with hopes of greater things to come.

Ashton’s 2nd XI made it a double winning Saturday as they cruised to victory over Port Sunlight at The Beets. Port Sunlight 193-9 (Micheal Graham 76, Henry Jones 45, Kris Green 5-41) Ashton 194-7 (Charlie Eaton 41, Matt Rhind 37, Ryan Kearney 3-50)

Ashton’s 3rd XI fell to defeat to near neighbours Trafford MV. Ashton 159-5 (Charlie Eaton 52, Max Lilley 51) MV 161-3 (Shivaji Janasalay 76 not out, Shashi Chandrashekaraiah 53 not out)
