Christleton CC 1st XI 275-5

Ashton on Mersey’s difficult season continued as they fell to another defeat away at Christleton.

With the hosts winning the toss and choosing to bat, Ashton’s effort to keep control on the run rate struggled from the start as Max Dunbavand  and Ben Stoddart took the Ashton bowling apart.

The runs continued to flow and despite Ashton breaking the opening partnership Stoddart continued to dominate proceedings.

He looked well set to record what would have been a well deserved century but fell one run short, being stumped trying to bring up three figures.

The rest of the Christleton innings made the most of the foundations laid by the top order, with the Ashton bowling lacking either penetration or the ability to contain. The final total of 275 was a fair reflection of the balance of the game.

In reply, Ashton tried to make a game of it but, in trying to maintain the rate needed, wickets fell.

Charlie Eaton did his best to lead a revival but when he fell for 49, any real prospect of an Ashton win fell with him.

Ashton’s effort came to an end 84 runs short with 10 overs unused. The failure of their bowling to either destroy or contain the opposition batting, and the lack of ability to consistently pace an innings has left them in dire trouble. They will need to show great character in the remaining games of the season.

A weakened Ashton 2nd XI were no match for table topping Alderley Edge. Ashton 80 (Ashray Bhamidipati 6-34) Alderley Edge 84-1(Calum Wilson 52 not out).

It was a similar story for the 3rd XI whose young side lost to an experienced Trafford Metrovics XI. MV 314-2 ( Steve Warner 112, Nishan Bhandary 100 not out) Ashton 177-8)
