Ashton recorded a much-needed win over struggling Mobberley at The Beets thanks to key contributions from a number of players.

Winning the toss and choosing to bat first, Ashton’s batting effort stuttered as a mixture of fine bowling from veteran Abdul Aqeel and some poor shot selection saw the home team in trouble at 47-4.

But Mike Roberts steadied the ship with a fine innings which brought the game back into Ashton’s favour. Playing fluently, Roberts glided to an elegant half century before falling to the impressive teenager Will Bagnall for 61.

Ashton’s middle order delivered with the bat, with Jack Cumersdale and Lee Brooks putting on 70 for the 8th wicket. Cumersdale posted his maiden fifty for Ashton as he guided the total past 200.

Aqeel took the bowling honours with 3-29, well supported by Sohaib Butt (3-60).

In reply a superb opening spell from Fraser Hay and James Marshall reduced the visitors to 74-5, and whilst Ben Wood, Butt and Aqeel showed glimmers of a fightback, tight bowling by spinners Ed Faulkner and Zaheer Khan kept the lid on any recovery.

The end came as Cumersdale concluded a fine day by taking the final two wickets to leave Ashton winners by 76 runs.

This was a much needed win for Ashton ahead of another vital game next week away at Ashley.

Ashton’s 2nd XI made it a maximum point Saturday, winning at Warrington. Warrington 151 all out (Raj Soni 57, Lee Heap 4-35) Ashton 154-5 (Ryan Carey 52, Matt Rhind 43, Raheel Noor 4-48).

And there was more good news on Sunday when the 3rd XI brought home a fine win over Cheadle at The Beets. Cheadle 177-7  (Saad Adeem 106 Steve Abell 4-9) Ashton 179-6 (Charlie Goldson 62 no, Sairam Subbiah 5-39)
